The structures of C4HsNO4Br and C4H4D4NO4Br have been investigated at room temperature by X-ray (2= 1.5418 A) and neutron diffraction (2= 1.210 A). The compounds are isostructural, crystallizing in the space group Pmmn with Z=2 and a= 12.8150, b= 5.8707, c= 5.0870 A and a= 12.8047, b= 5.8670, c = 5.0807 A, respectively. Positively charged iminodiacetic acid ions are connected by hydrogen bonds O-H...Br and N-H...Br forming layers that are stacked in the e direction. The forces between the layers are van der Waals. (X-N) difference syntheses have been calculated for the normal compound to illustrate the electron density within the organic ion and in the hydrogen bonds.
