Physical workload, perceived exertion, and output of cut wood as related to age in motor-manual cutting

Abstract: Physical workload, output of cut wood, and perceived exertion were studied among 15 younger (mean age 29 years) and 16 older (mean age 59 years) lumberjacks, using a chainsaw and paid on a piece-rate basis. Oxygen consumption was measured with portable equipment, while heart rate was measured telemetrically. The oxygen consumption for all working phases was 1.8 +/- 0.2 l/min (means +/- SD) (younger) and 1.5 +/- 0.2 l/min (older), which corresponded to 49 +/- 4% and 53 +/- 7% of maximal oxygen consumption estim… Show more

“…12,37 The high intensity can be compared with that in very heavy work, 15 such as wood-cutting. 38 Therefore long and brisk walks should not be regarded as low-intensity and fat-burning training for obese women in general. Since the average work load during a day causes fatigue if it exceeds 30±40% Á O 2 max, 15 it seems natural that walking for exercise may be too demanding and fatiguing for many obese women.…”

“…Motor-manual timber harvesting is considered to be one of the hardest and most dangerous types of work [1,2,3,4]. Average values of heart rate (HR) during chainsaw operating oscillate between 110-138 bpm [5,6,7,8,9]. Logging using a chainsaw also creates a large load on the musculoskeletal system as a result of adopting awkward (forced) postures during operations.…”
