Hearing Disorders in Congenital Toxoplasmosis: A Literature Review

Abstract: Introduction  Several studies show correlations between congenital toxoplasmosis and hearing loss, with a broad diversity of levels of hearing loss and specifications of hearing disorders. Objective  To describe the studies found in the literature regarding hearing disorders in congenital toxoplasmosis. Data Synthesis  A literature review was conducted on the Lilacs, SciELO, PubMed and Scopus databases by combining the following keywords: congenital toxoplasmosis and hearing . “…Permanent hearing loss can be caused by several factors, including exposure to noise, ototoxic drugs, or PCBs, age, congenital or immunological disorders, and other infections [ 44 , 45 , 46 , 47 , 48 , 49 ]. Congenital toxoplasmosis can cause sensorineural hearing loss in humans [ 50 ], but little is known on the specific characteristics of the type and level of hearing loss, or of other disorders possibly involved in the auditory processing [ 51 ]. Histopathological and immunohistochemical studies in infants with congenital toxoplasmosis showed a decreased neuron population and in one individual a significant loss of OHCs, especially severe at the basal turn [ 52 ].…”

“…Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a common clinical entity in newborns [1,2] and children [3,4]. Pediatric SNHL is an etiologically heterogeneous condition caused by a plethora of genetic [5][6][7] and environmental factors [8][9][10][11][12]. Recent advances in molecular genetics have revolutionized the assessment armamentarium of pediatric SNHL, enabling us to ascertain the etiology in 40-60% of the children with SNHL [13,14].…”

“…Some researchers have shown that the consumption of undercooked meat can contribute to T. gondii infection, although it has also been found that freezing at a temperature of -20 °C for 18 to 24 hours destroys the cysts present in contaminated meat [42]. The literature is consistent in demonstrating that the transmission of toxoplasmosis is higher in places where people have poor hygienic habits when preparing food [43,45]. Thus, the information obtained in this study of congenital toxoplasmosis and risk factors for acquiring this disease, verifies reasons for further studies in health centers, not only in the Federal District, throughout Brazil.…”

“…In a study conducted in São Paulo, the authors suggest that infrequent appointments make it difficult for women to be well informed about the preventive methods for toxoplasma. They also prevent the detection of new cases, making it impossible for an early treatment with spiramycin, which would prevent congenital transmission [43,44]. Another important aspect analyzed in our study concerned the access of pregnant women to basic sanitation and safe drinking water.…”
