Abstract: Due to the growing world population, crop yields must increase to meet the rising demand. Crop plants also require adaptation to optimize performance in the changing environments caused by climate change. Improving photosynthetic carbon fixation is a promising, albeit technically challenging, strategy whose potential has only just begun to be considered in breeding programmes. Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), a fundamental enzyme of carbon fixation, is extremely inefficient and many s… Show more

“…A reduction in stomatal resistance via the opening of the stomata aperture promotes higher CO 2 uptake for photosynthetic C input at the expense of substantial water loss and adversely affects plants in semiarid or arid environments [ 13 ]. However, improving the conductance of CO 2 from the substomatal spaces to Rubisco should possibly increase photosynthesis without adversely affecting water use [ 14 ]. Some other plants that have evolved adaptation to withstand harsh and dry conditions are C4 and crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plants.…”

“…Despite being one of nature's most conserved processes, photosynthesis has a staggering number of component inefficiencies (Long et al, 2006; Evans, 2013). These inefficiencies inspire current research efforts to improve crop yields through manipulating photosynthetic pathways (Ort et al, 2015; Andralojc et al, 2018) and exploiting natural variation in photosynthetic rates (Lawson et al, 2012; Meacham et al, 2016). Regardless of the means of improvement, the ability to non-destructively sample phenotypic variation in photosynthetic capacity among tens to hundreds of thousands of plants representing genotypic variation within a reasonable time presents a significant phenotyping challenge (Furbank and Tester, 2011).…”

“…The exclusive client of Rca is the photosynthetic key enzyme Rubisco (ribulose-1,5bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase), which is directly or indirectly responsible for all biomass production. Since Rca is required for optimal Rubisco function, understanding its mechanism is important in efforts to enhance photosynthesis with the goal to increasing crop yields (Andralojc et al, 2018;Bailey-Serres et al, 2019;Eva et al, 2019;Sharwood, 2017;Singer et al, 2019;Slattery and Ort, 2019).…”
