Abstract: Ethanol oxidation by rat liver catalase (the ;peroxidatic' reaction) was studied quantitatively with respect to the rate of H(2)O(2) generation, catalase haem concentration, ethanol concentration and the steady-state concentration of the catalase-H(2)O(2) intermediate (Compound I). At a low ratio of H(2)O(2)-generation rate to catalase haem concentration, the rate of ethanol oxidation was independent of the catalase haem concentration. The magnitude of the inhibition of ethanol oxidation by cyanide was not par… Show more

“…Since peroxisomal acyl-CoA oxidase is an Hz02 producer, compound I also serves as a probe for the subcellular location of partial reactions of fatty acid oxidation [20,21]. Laurate infusion also resulted in some quenching of flavoprotein fluorescence, and since the latter has been shown in the liver to be mainly due to mitochondrial lipoamide dehydrogenase [22], which is in equilibrium with the mitochondrial free NADH/NAD+ pool, the result indicates that mitochondria are also involved in the metabolism of laurate.…”

“…Oshino et al [9] have observed peroxisomal Hz& production when rat livers were perfused with urate and glycolate (substrates for urate oxidase and L-o-hydroxy acid oxidase, respectively) and demonstrated that this constituted nearly half of the total liver respiration. Thus they concluded that biological oxidations of considerable physiolo~~l signitIcance are possible in the peroxisome.…”
