Assembling semiconductor quantum dots in hierarchical photonic cellulose nanocrystal films: circularly polarized luminescent nanomaterials as optical coding labels

Abstract: Exploring semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) is desirable to design optoelectronic devices owing to the easily tunable emission wavelengths and photophysical stability.

“…Strong CPL signals have been observed in photonic films prepared from a mixture of achiral semiconductor NCs and lyotropic liquid crystals of cellulose using CdSe/ZnS QDs [120] and CdSe/CdS QRs [121]. In both cases the formation of a left-handed helical structure leads to the emission of right-handed circularly polarized luminescence with g lum up to -0.3 for QDs and -0.45 for QRs.…”

“…HNF has the potential to be used as a template to induce chirality in achiral organic/inorganic materials because of its chiral shape and firmness [77][78][79][80][81][82][83]. If the chirality transfer succeeds in metal nanoparticles [84], fluorescence dye, and additional LC molecules, various chiroptical applications can be rationalized, for example, tailored polarization rotation [82], photonic metamaterial [85], chiral fluorescence [86], etc.…”

“…For example, Chen (Li et al 2019b) got right-handed, tunable fluorescent materials by integrating multiple emissive, up-converting nanoparticles into cellulose nanocrystal based chiral photonic films. Xu et al (2019) constructed transparent and photoluminescent nanocellulose (NC) paper, which contained ZnSe quantum dot (QD) with high quantum yield as a functional filler. Unfortunately, all these improvements could only be realized at the expense of the mechanical properties such as strength and Young's modulus or structural stability because of the poor interfacial interactions.…”
