PEG Molecular Net-Cloth Grafted on Polymeric Substrates and Its Bio-Merits

Abstract: Polymer brushes and hydrogels are sensitive to the environment, which can cause uncontrolled variations on their performance. Herein, for the first time, we report a non-swelling “PEG molecular net-cloth” on a solid surface, fabricated using a novel “visible light induced surface controlled graft cross-linking polymerization” (VSCGCP) technique. Via this method, we show that 1) the 3D-network structure of the net-cloth can be precisely modulated and its thickness controlled; 2) the PEG net-cloth has excellent … Show more

“…In our previous work, we demonstrated that the surface-attached highly crosslinked PEG hydrogel exhibited a nonswelling property. 32 The hydrogel film prepared in the present work composed of 90% crosslinker (PEGDA) also is highly crosslinked and nonswelling, which can maintain stable spot shape and size during complex operation processes.…”

“…The absorption peak at 1722 cm −1 belongs to the C O stretching vibration of ester groups derived from PEGDA and GMA. 31,32 A new absorption band at 910 cm −1 appeared [Fig. 1 (a)], ascribed to the epoxy ring from GMA, 33 indicating that the epoxy groups have been successfully incorporated into the hydrogel film.…”

“…Conversely, the higher degree of crosslinking in PEGDA 700 results in lower swelling. 50,51 Due to effective adhesion between the two layers, this differential swelling caused the PEGDA 700/4000 bilayers to curve spontaneously. The magnitude of the radius of curvature is a result of the balance between this differential swelling and the bending rigidity of the composite structure-a property that is dependent upon the modulus and thickness of each of the layers.…”

“…In this study, an extremely simple and mild technique, called visible light induced graft polymerization [31][32][33], was used to immobilize two enzymes on polymer substrate separately and simultaneously. The mechanism of this technique composed of two chemical steps (Scheme 1).…”
