BIRC5 is a prognostic biomarker associated with tumor immune cell infiltration

Abstract: BIRC5 is an immune-related gene that inhibits apoptosis and promotes cell proliferation. It is highly expressed in most tumors and leads to poor prognosis in cancer patients. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the expression level of BIRC5 in different tumors and patient prognosis, clinical parameters, and its role in tumor immunity. Genes co-expressed with BIRC5 were analyzed, and functional enrichment analysis was performed. The relationship between BIRC5 expression and the immune and strom… Show more

“…Furthermore, it is of concern that our study reports BIRC5 levels to strongly increase in THP1 exposed to mdEMF and stEMF at several time points. Perhaps our data already constitute a potential mechanistic explanation to reports on increased childhood leukemia upon residential EMF exposure, as BIRC5 promotes cell proliferation and constitutes an important biomarker to predict the clinical outcome in AML patients [ 45 ]. Similarly, EMF upregulated EGR1 expression, a multifaceted transcription factor that mediates proliferation but also inflammatory signaling [ 47 , 48 ], constituting another potential link to observed effects on inflammation.…”

“…Among the top hits upregulated in THP1, and to a minor degree in PBMC, was the baculoviral inhibitor of apoptosis repeat-containing 5 (BIRC5). BIRC5 is a well-known biomarker for tumor progression as it promotes cell proliferation and overall rates of survival and is associated with poor clinical outcome in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) [ 45 , 46 ]. THP1 cells are derived from a patient with AML and are therefore expected to show high basal levels of BIRC5.…”

“…Immune in ltration cells in TIME plays an important role in the occurrence and development of malignant tumors and affects the clinical prognosis of patients with malignant tumors [27][28][29] .Patients with tumors often have abnormal immune cell in ltration, indicating that the struggle between immune cells and tumor cells is a process of continuous elimination, balance, and escape 30 .OAS family genes were positively correlated with most immune in ltrating cells, particularly M1 macrophages, CD8 + T cell; additionally, there were a proportion of immune in ltrating cells that were negatively correlated with OAS family genes, such as M2 macrophages, myeloid dendritic cell, etc(Fig. 6).…”

“…BIRC5 is a gene (survivin), which acts as a prognostic biomarker in neoplastic diseases, indirectly inhibits apoptosis and promotes cell proliferation. Qui et al found that its overexpression, associated with immune response 52,53 , may play a key role in nasal polyps development 54 . However, these authors examined mucosal samples from various locations (turbinate, tissue surrounding polyps and nasal polyps) 54 .…”
