Abstract: Efficient coupling of mechanical properties of SWNTs with the matrix leading to the transfer of unique mechanical properties of SWNTs to the macroscopic composites is a tremendous challenge of today's materials science. The typical mechanical properties of known SWNT composites, such as strength, stiffness, and toughness, are assessed in an introductory survey where we focused on concrete numerical parameters characterizing mechanical properties. Obtaining ideal stress transfer will require fine optimization o… Show more

“…ANFs were combined in this work with poly(ethyleneoxide) (PEO) serving as a solid ion-conducting media using the layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly method 27 . In the past, composites made by LBL or other methods have shown exceptional mechanical performance 28 or ionic conductivity 29,30 , but not the combination of the two or any dendrite-suppressing capabilities. The ability of LBL to produce thin, uniform and nearly defect-free films is also of importance.…”

“…Another group has reported 3.8 GPa strength and 293 GPa of elastic modulus that stretched aligned CNT sheet, which is the highest strength and elastic modulus reported to date [28]. Several researchers have also reported other properties, such as mechanical stiffness and electrical properties of aligned CNT /polymer matrix composites [29,30].…”

“…Selecting nanomaterials based on unique electrical and optical properties allow for flexibility in different modes of neural stimulation (direct current or photostimulation). Freestanding film from LbL assembly cannot only retain excellent electrochemical properties but also offer mechanical flexibility and unusually high strength [275]. Flexible neural electrodes are believed to play an important role in improving chronic in vivo tissue integration [133,276,277].…”
