Abstract: This paper presents the use of nanoscale chemistry to synthesize a multilevel, hierarchically built nanoparticle, which we define as a nanoclinic, for targeted diagnostics and therapy. This nanoclinic, produced by multistep chemistry in a nanosize micelle, consists of a thin silica shell encapsulating magnetic (Fe2O3) nanoparticles and fluorescent dyes for enhanced contrast magnetic resonance and optical imaging and magnetic-induced cancer therapy. Furthermore, the surface of these prototype nanoclinics is fun… Show more

“…These multifunctional "nanoclinic" nanoparticles consist of a thin silica shell encapsulating magnetic iron oxide and fluorescent dyes for enhanced magnetic resonance and optical imaging. 57 As described before, the limiting step in the production of VNPs is the efficiency in introducing the CLPs into viral glycoprotein-expressing cells. 21 Several methods have been used by our group 21 and others, 25 yet overall yields remained low.…”

“…Recently, multifunctional magnetic and fluorescent nanoparticles have been developed that consist of a thin silica shell encapsulating magnetic nanoparticles as well as fluorescent dyes (55)(56)(57). These nanoparticles are potentially useful in a variety of areas, because they can be simultaneously manipulated with an external magnetic field and characterized in situ with fluorescence microscopy or confocal scanning microscopy.…”

“…In most of these works, colloidal solution techniques were employed. Lu et al [25] and Levy et al [26] coated iron oxide particles with silica shells containing organic dyes which provided the fluorescent properties of the nanoparticles. Sahoo et al [27] employed covalent binding of organic dyes on the surface of magnetite particles.…”
