“…Peroxiredoxins, a large antioxidant gene family, have a wide tissue distribution but the highest expression of Prx I and Prx II occur in bone marrow, liver, testis, ovary and heart, followed by spleen and brain [13,15]. Using immunohistochemical staining of mouse pancreas we show that Prx I and Prx II expression is mainly localized to pancreatic islets, with almost no signals in exocrine pancreas.…”

“…Mouse insulinoma cells βTC6-F7 (passages [15][16][17][18][19][20] were propagated in DMEM medium containing 5.5 mmol/l glucose, supplemented with 10% heat-inactivated FCS, 100 U/ml penicillin and 100 µg/ml streptomycin. Rat insulinoma cells INS-1 (passages [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20] were propagated in RPMI-1640 medium containing 11 mmol/l glucose, supplemented with 10% heat-inactivated FCS, 100 U/ml penicillin, 100 µg/ml streptomycin, 10 mmol/l HEPES-buffer, 2 mmol/l L-glutamine, 1 mmol/l sodium pyruvate, 50 µmol/l β-mercaptoethanol. All cells were cultured at 37°C in a humidified atmosphere containing 95% air and 5% CO 2 .…”

“…In addition, levels of peroxiredoxin (Prx) 1 and 2 in the livers of young (6–7 months old) Tg( TXN ) +/0 and WT control mice were measured because one of the major roles of Trx is as a hydrogen donor for Prxs in reductive reactions, which reduce peroxides [3,4]. The data in Figure 10 show that no significant changes in Prx1 (Figure 10(a)) and Prx2 (Figure 10(b)) levels were observed in the livers of young (6–7 months old) Tg( TXN ) +/0 and WT control mice.

“…Trx1 plays an important role in maintaining the reduced environment in cells through thiol-disulfide exchange reactions. A major role of Trx is as a hydrogen donor for enzymes involved in reductive reactions, e.g., ribonucleotide reductase, which reduces ribonucleotides to deoxyribonucleotides for DNA synthesis; peroxiredoxins (Prxs) which reduce peroxides [3,4]; and methionine sulfoxide reductases, which reduce methionine sulfoxide in proteins and provide protection against oxidative stress [68]. All Trxs catalyze the reduction of disulfides in proteins more efficiently (orders of magnitude faster) than GSH or dithiothreitol [9].…”
