Correlation between anthropometric data and length and thickness of the tendons of the semitendinosus and gracilis muscles used for grafts in reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament

Abstract: ObjectivePreoperative estimation of the length and diameter of the semitendinosus (ST) and gracilis (G) tendons can assist surgeons and allow them to have the opportunity to choose alternative grafts. The aim of this study was to investigate whether anthropometric measurements such as height, weight and body mass index (BMI) or the patient's age and sex have any correlation with the thickness and the length of ST and G tendons.MethodsData were gathered from 64 patients who underwent the surgical procedure of a… Show more

“…Furthermore, we found no correlation between BMI and the final graft diameter in males as the females were excluded in our study. In previous studies, one author reported that BMI was correlated to the graft diameter in females but not in male [21], another author showed no correlation with BMI in both genders [11], and few authors had shown only a weak positive correlation between BMI and the quadrupled hamstring graft diameter [21,22]. It is interesting to note that, in our study, the patient age was the only independent variable that had a positive correlation with the final graft diameter.…”

“…Various studies exist in the literature regarding prediction of graft size. However, no consensus has been reached due to differences in results between the studies [11][12][13].…”

“…The tendon of ST muscle has its clinical application as the autograft in various surgeries. The ST muscle tendon autograft has been used for the anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction [ 3 4 ]. The ST muscle tendon graft is also used to reconstruct the tears of tendo-calcaneus [ 5 ].…”

“…The ST muscle allografts have given the good results in the reconstruction of lateral ligaments of ankle joint as well [ 6 ]. It was described that the preoperative knowledge of ST muscle tendon length will help the operating surgeon in choosing the alternative grafts [ 3 ].…”
