Abstract: In the last decades, the development of real-time ultrasonography has allowed the direct view of the fetus in the uterus, as well as assessing its activity. The advent of three-dimensional ultrasonography (3D) at the end of the 80s initiated a new era in diagnostic imaging for Obstetrics, dramatically increasing the possibility of studying the fetus. Recently, a new technique allowing the 3D image to be transformed into real-time was introduced: the four-dimensional (4D) ultrasonography. It allows the continuo… Show more

“…Neuroinflammation is thought to be one of the main factors involved in neurodevelopmental impairment in preterm infants (Z et al, 2009;Lei et al, 2017). This hypothesis proposes that enhanced CNS and related systemic inflammation contribute to neuronal damage, astrogliosis, and oligodendrocytes loss (Stewart et al, 2013;Molnár and Rutherford, 2013;Guimarães Filho et al, 1992;Vinall and Grunau, 2014;Jaeger et al, 2015). The inflammatory process alters neuronal and glial cells proliferation, differentiation, and may also increase cell death rate (Vasconcelos et al, 2014;Wikström et al, 2008;Ohls et al, 2014).…”

“… 1 , 2 In this context, the advent of 3D/4D ultrasound has been a major breakthrough in the field: the fetus can be observed in real time, and very small-scale movements can be identified. 3 7 …”
