Systematic review of efficacy of LIFT procedure in crpytoglandular fistula-in-ano

Abstract: Background fistula-in-ano is a common problem. Ligation of intersphincteric fistula tract (LIFT) is a new addition to the list of operations available to deal with complex fistula-in-ano. Objective we sought to qualitatively analyze studies describing LIFT for crpytoglandular fistula-in-ano and determine its efficacy. Data sources MEDLINE (Pubmed, Ovid), Embase, Scopus and Cochrane Library were searched. Study selection all clinical trials which studied LIFT or compared LIFT with … Show more

“…Our result is similar to the finding of Abcarian et al and shows that healing rates are better for patients who have underwent less than two previous operations (60% healing rate) versus those who had underwent 2 or more operations before undergoing LIFT (36% healing rate) at end of follow-up (median, 16 months). Murugesan et al [ 10 ] have provided a narrative synthesis of the findings from the 22 studies; no incontinence or change in continence were reported in 18/21 studies analyzed. In this retrospective study, two incontinences were observed, including gas and fecal incontinence.…”

The commonest age group of presentation was third and fourth decade of life, Khalid et al observed a high incidence in third and fourth decades which is comparable to present study.…”

“…Han et al 26 described short-term results for their use of a bioprosthetic plug (LIFT-PLUG) in 21 patients, following up their patients for a median of 14 months (12)(13)(14)(15). This involved the insertion of a bioprosthetic anal plug within the fistula tract.…”
