Abstract: Inflammatory diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) require recurrent invasive tests, including blood tests, radiology, and endoscopic evaluation both to diagnose and assess disease activity, and to determine optimal therapeutic strategies. Simple ‘bedside’ biomarkers could be used in all phases of patient management to avoid unnecessary investigation and guide further management. The focal adhesion complex (FAC) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple inflammatory diseases, including IB… Show more

“…Understanding the dynamics of FA formation and changes in FA-associated parameters is beneficial not only for understanding the fundamentals of biology but also for the field of biosensor diagnostics and screening for clinical applications 36 , 43 , 44 . Changes in FA-associated parameters, such as FA sizes and traction forces, have been linked to critical cellular processes, including metastasis, apoptosis, and chemotaxis, as well as pathologies of cancers and other diseases 9 , 29 , 36 , 45 47 .…”

“…Focal adhesion complex (FAC) is one of the candidate biomarkers of cellular signal transduction pathways. FAC can be involved in regulating inflammatory gene expression via signal transduction pathways such as interleukin 1 (IL-1) signaling [16, 17] or regulating calcium fluxes via phosphatidyl inositol signaling [16, 18], which impacts on inflammatory cascades. FAC has been implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple inflammatory diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and rheumatoid arthritis.…”

“…The interaction between environmental factors and susceptible genes will inevitably result in a significant alteration of proteome profile in both serum and inflamed mucosa of IBD, which has been recently considered as the potential diagnostic and differentiate biomarkers for IBD [54] . For instance, Meuwis et al.…”
