RESUMOObjetivo: Estudar a prevalência do uso de descongestionantes nasais tópicos por automedicação e a auto percepção da qualidade de vida pelos acadêmicos da graduação em áreas da saúde da Universidade Federal do Amazonas, em Manaus-Amazonas-Brasil. Métodos: Estudo transversal de natureza qualitativa e quantitativa. A coleta de dados consistiu na aplicação de questionário estruturado pela própria equipe de pesquisa e do Índice de 8 itens EuroHisQol 8, versão validada e traduzida para o português. Para análise estatística utilizou-se o teste qui-quadrado e o teste exato de Fisher, com nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: Dos 279 participantes, 69,9% já se automedicaram com descongestionantes. Aqueles já diagnosticados com doenças nasais crônicas e os que já consultaram ou receberam orientação médica acerca do fármaco, em momento anterior ao uso, foram mais propensos a utilizar o medicamento por automedicação (p <0,05). Em relação à qualidade de vida, o valor médio obtido foi 3,42 (± 0,97) para os estudantes que fizeram uso dos descongestionantes e 3,29 (± 0,96) para os que não fizeram. Conclusão: O uso de descongestionantes nasais tópicos por automedicação entre estudantes das áreas da saúde é elevado, mesmo sendo um grupo que possua acesso à informação de qualidade. Parece, contudo, não haver diferença estatística significativa em relação a auto percepção de qualidade de vida entre os participantes que se automedicaram e os que não se automedicaram, possivelmente, essa relação entre qualidade respiratória e qualidade de vida precise ser melhor esclarecida em pesquisas futuras.

A model of allergic rhinitis (AR) in BALB/c mice was established and evaluated to provide experimental subjects for further research. Preparation of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs), including isolation, expansion culture, passaging, cryopreservation, and preparation of cell suspensions, provided materials for experimental research and clinical treatment. The mouse AR model was established by ovalbumin (OVA) intraperitoneal injection and the nasal stimulation induction method, and the model had a good effect and high repeatability. GFP-labeled hUCMSCs had good effects and were stable cells that could be used for tracking in animals. Transplantation of hUCMSCs by intraperitoneal and tail vein injections had a specific effect on the AR model of mice, and tail vein injection had a better effect. Tracking of hUCMSCs in vivo showed that the three groups of mice had the greatest number of hUCMSCs in the nose at week 2. The mouse AR model was used to evaluate the efficacy of hUCMSC transplantation via multiple methods for AR. The distribution of hUCMSCs in vivo was tracked by detecting green fluorescent protein (GFP), and the treatment mechanism of hUCMSCs was elucidated. This study provides technical methods and a theoretical basis for the clinical application of hUCMSCs.

Background: The use of intranasal drug delivery devices (IDDD) for the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR) is frequent because they are simple, efficient, and safe, and mainly because they are perceived as low-risk. However, it is speculated that contact between the nasal mucosa and an IDDD may give rise to infections once the nose is colonized by bacteria, and there are currently no proper instructions for IDDD sanitization. The objective of this study was to evaluate the possibility of contamination of an IDDD for topical medication after simulating use in healthy individuals. Methods: The in vitro study consisted of 14 healthy individuals of both sexes, between the ages of 18 and 24 years. Samples were collected immediately after the opening of each IDDD and after simulating use by the subjects. Afterwards, the samples were deposited in tubes and kept in an incubator at 37 °C. After 48 hours, the samples were inoculated on Müller-Hinton agar. Qualitative analyses of the appearance of the samples were performed after 24 and 48 hours, and after 72 hours the presence or absence of bacteria was evaluated macroscopically. Results: After 24 hours of incubation, 21.4% (n = 3) of the samples presented with a turbid appearance and after 48h, 71% (n = 10) of the samples presented with a turbid appearance and positive bacterial growth. Conclusion: The results suggest that IDDDs for topical medications may be important sources of contamination or recontamination of the nasal mucosa of individuals who are being treated for upper respiratory tract conditions. A better understanding of the risks of re-using IDDDs after previous contact with the nasal mucosa will improve guidelines on hygiene procedures and prevention of related risks.
