Background: Foreign body aspiration (FBA) is a perilous condition with a high mortality rate, especially in children less than three years of age. Aim: This study aimed to assess parental knowledge and practices toward FBA in children in the Al Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted among Saudi parents at AlQassim region, Saudi Arabia during the period between February 2020 and June 2020. A validated self-administered questionnaire containing 16 questions of knowledge and practices toward FBA was distributed online via various Social Media platforms. Correct answers were coded and scored. Participant responses were grouped based on their score level of knowledge and practices. Results: We recruited 385 parents with a mean age of 35.4 (range: 19–59) years, and 59.2% were female and 40.8% were male. The mean ± SD knowledge score was 4.97 (1.42)/8 points and the practice score was 12.4 (2.13)/20 points. Parents with poor and good knowledge were 61.3% and 36.9% and those with poor and good practices were 55.3% and 44.7%, respectively. Female professionals with less children who were more aware of FBA significantly influenced knowledge, while having no incidence of FBA among children and having heard of FBA significantly influenced practices. Conclusion: We found that parental knowledge and practices toward FBA were insufficient. Educated females with less children that heard about FBA influenced parental knowledge. Also, having no incidence of FBA among children and being aware about FBA led to a better impact in parental practices.

Choking is a pediatric emergency that threatens life. Choking occurs in 80% of under three-year-old children worldwide. Many children do not receive help since the aid provider fears causing harm due to the absence of choking case knowledge. Improving parent’s knowledge can decrease choking risk in children that threatens life. This scoping review aimed to identify education provision regarding foreign body aspiration on children. This study was a scoping review with choking handling articles to identify education provisions regarding choking handling on children. Article search was carried out using internet databases, i.e., PubMed, Proquest, and Sciencedirect. The selection was performed using a PRISMA flow diagram. The search results obtained 1,081 literatures, title-screening excluded 948 articles and obtaining 98 articles to be tested for eligibility. The 91 articles with unrelated objectives were excluded. Seven remaining articles following the inclusion criteria were identified. Providing education for parents about choking prevention and handling on children is an essential component of the public health approach as video-based e-learning program, direct learning, installation of hazard warning of choking. Educational programs will be effective when utilizing various information sources and assigning additional healthcare providers tasks to educate parents and the community.

A obstrução das vias aéreas por corpos estranhos é considerada um acidente grave e potencialmente fatal que pode ocorrer em qualquer fase da vida, devido a isso, é imprescindível que às mães ou o responsável tenham conhecimentos sobre primeiros socorros desde o pré-natal, para que, no nascimento, já detenham de conhecimentos sobre o assunto, pois se surgir à necessidade de intervenção, que seja imediata, aumentando assim a probabilidade de sobrevida. O presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar o conhecimento das puérperas relacionado aos primeiros socorros frente à obstrução das vias aéreas por corpo estranho em neonatos e identificar o nível de conhecimento das mães relacionado com as variáveis sociodemográficas. Trata-se de um estudo de abordagem quantitativa, de cunho descritivo, que foi realizado em uma maternidade referência do Nordeste. A coleta de dados foi realizada em uma das Alas da maternidade, composta por 10 leitos, sendo dois deles desativados e ocorreu por meio de questionário semiestruturado, no período de agosto a setembro de 2021, com as puérperas que estiveram no período do pós-parto correspondente á 24h-48h. A amostra final foi composta por 100 puérperas. As mesmas apresentaram nível intermediário de conhecimento sobre o assunto, todavia os serviços de saúde tem papel fundamental na disseminação dessas informações.
