Regional analysis of potential polychlorinated biphenyl degrading bacterial strains from China

Abstract: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), the chlorinated derivatives of biphenyl, are one of the most prevalent, highly toxic and persistent groups of contaminants in the environment. The objective of this study was to investigate the biodegradation of PCBs in northeastern (Heilongjiang Province), northern (Shanxi Province) and eastern China (Shanghai municipality). From these areas, nine soil samples were screened for PCB-degrading bacteria using a functional complementarity method. The genomic 16S rDNA locus was am… Show more

“…Yu et al [46] also reported that hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) were the dominant types of OCPs in this region, and PCB-118 was the major component of the PCBs in both water and soil samples. Some reports have proven that a diverse group of bacteria, such as Acinetobacter, Bacillus, Flavobacterium and Pseudomonas, have the ability to biodegrade certain PCBs and OCPs [47,48]. Therefore, the relation between bacterial functional gene metabolism and the biodegradation of organic pollutants suggested that microbial communities actively may maintain the water quality in the Miyun Reservoir.…”

“…There are several advantages of our study over previous studies. Previous research has been restricted to characterizing PCB-degrading bacterial strains ( 13 , 23 , 33 , 34 ), the substrate specificity ( 2 , 14 , 16 , 35 ) or genetic modifications ( 27 , 36 , 37 ) of biphenyl dioxygenase, and investigating PCB-degrading bacterial flora in PCB-polluted natural landscapes ( 8 , 38 40 ). Herein, we were able to identify the application model in which the newly constructed recombinant E. coli expressing biphenyl dioxygenase of the B. xenovorans LB400 strain was augmented to the isolated wild-type PCB-degrading bacterial strain.…”

“…Because microorganisms can convert organic pollutants into inorganic matters, nutrients, and cell biomass, they are widely used for organic pollution treatment (Yang et al 2014). Some hyperaccumulators were discovered for the removal of arsenic and heavy metals (Chen et al 2002;Wei, Zhou, and Wang 2005;Xue et al 2003;Yang, Long, and Ni 2002), and lots of high effective strains have been screened out for organic pollutants like PCB and PAHs in China (Jiang et al 2015;Liu et al 2017;Shuai et al 2016). Molecular biological technology is becoming an important tool to clarify the bioremediation mechanism in recent years.…”
