Hepatitis E virus seroprevalence among schistosomiasis patients in Northeastern Brazil

Abstract: This study demonstrates that the seroprevalence of HEV is high in patients with Schistosoma mansoni in Northeastern of Brazil. Past HEV infection is associated with higher frequency of liver enzymes abnormalities. HEV infection and its role on the severity of liver disease should be further investigated among patients with Schistosoma mansoni.

“…The prevalence is the same with the prevalence recorded in United States [10]. However, it is lower than a prevalence of 22.5% in Rural Bangladesh [8], 14.3% in Austria [2], 5.38% in Italy [4], 5.8% in Ghana [11] 18.8% among schistosomiasis patients in Northeastern Brazil [12]. It is higher than a 2.6% prevalence recorded at Switzerland [13].…”

“…A 10‐year gap in knowledge followed, until 2011, when studies from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Colombia, reported respective HEV prevalences . This wave of studies followed the global reports of chronic hepatitis E virus infection by HEV‐3 in immunosuppressed individuals, especially those with solid organ transplantation as well as the reports of extra‐hepatic manifestations of HEV.…”

“…In Brazil, the reported seroprevalence rates vary widely and are difficult to interpret. Reported seroprevalence in blood donors varies from 0.44% [11] to 10.0% [12]; rates from 2.0% [13] to 13.0% [14] have been reported in rural populations, and the prevalence ranges from 10.0% [15] to 18.8% [16] in patients with comorbid diagnosis of chronic schistosomiasis. The aim of this study was therefore to systematically evaluate the divergent seroprevalence studies of hepatitis E in adults in Brazil.…”
