To study the photocatalytic efficiency of wastewater treatment processes, the nanocomposites of conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and ZnO nanoparticles were prepared by in-situ synthesis. ZnO is an excellent photocatalyst under UV light, but due to high band gap, photons of visible light have insufficient energy to excite electrons from valence to conductive band, which limits its activity under visible light and therefore practical usage is limited. The PEDOT conductive polymer was used to increase the photocatalytic activity of ZnO since conductive polymers are known as efficient electron donor and good electron transporters upon visible-light excitation. Polymerization of pure PEDOT and PEDOT/ZnO nanocomposites was carried out at varying monomer:oxidant ratio (1:2; 1:3; 1:5) with the ammonium persulfate (APS) used as the oxidant. Samples were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, XRD analysis, SEM microscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy and TG analysis. Photocatalytic activity was assessed through removal of C.I. Reactive Red 45 (RR45) azo dye under simulated Solar and UV-A irradiation. Photocatalysis was monitored by measuring discoloration of RR45 using UV/Vis spectroscopy. The results indicate that very low concentration of PEDOT conductive polymer in PEDOT/ZnO nanocomposite can significantly contribute to the efficiency of the photocatalytic process during wastewater treatment.

The hybridization of polyaniline (PANI) and TiO 2 leads to unique materials, which exhibit the enhancement of photocatalytic properties. Further improvement requires high dispersion state of TiO 2 in the hybrid. In this study, highly dispersed PANI nanofiber/TiO 2 nanoparticles hybrids were obtained by modifying the surface charge of TiO 2 nanoparticles via layer by layer (LbL) technique. The structural studies of the hybrids confirmed the presence of PANI along with anatase TiO 2 nanoparticles. The degradation of methylene blue (MB) in an aqueous solution under visible light irradiation was carried out to study the photocatalytic activity of the hybrids. The hybridization of PANI nanofiber and TiO 2 nanoparticles resulted in an enhancement of photocatalytic activity for visible light.

Abstract-Photocatalytic removal of phenol was studied using the photocatalyst poly(fluorine-co-bithiophene) (PFB)/TiO 2 under visible light. After two hours irradiation with a three watts GaN LEDs (light emitting diode) cluster, about 75% removal of phenol. the degradation reaction showed the firsorder behavior and the reaction rate constants (k) of PFB/TiO 2 was calculated to be 0.0169 min -1 . Diffuse reflectance spectra showed that the absorbance range of PFB/TiO 2 was expanded from 387 nm (TiO 2 ) to above 500 nm. Photoluminescent spectra and photoluminescent quantum efficiency indicated that electrons were transferred from PFB to the conduction band of TiO 2 . The surface modification using PFB did not decrease the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 under the UV light irradiation.
