“…Although he did not understand the underlying mechanism of this growth enhancement, Bengtsson (1979) noted that thyroid hormones regulate fish growth. Much research has documented that PCBs alter thyroid hormone (T) levels in a variety of fish species (Mayer et al ., 1977; Leatherland et al ., 1978; Fingerman & Russell, 1980; Besselink et al ., 1996; Palace et al ., 2001; Brown et al ., 2004) although the pattern of whether T 3 or T 4 is more affected, and the dynamic changes in response to dose and over time seems to be complex and variable by species.…”

“…3), since, after i.p. injection of flounder with Clophen A50, Besselink et al (1996) stated that, for instance, floun-der is not a species sensitive to PCB exposure, which is consistent with the findings of Eggens et al (1996). However, also dab may not be induced consistently well by PCBs and may need relatively high concentrations, as suggested when looking at the levels of PCBA60 able to induce EROD activity in Figs.…”

“…T 3 is the active form of THs and it is largely produced by the peripheral enzymatic monodeiodination of T 4 mainly in the liver and other tissues (Van der Geyten et al, 1998). Most of the chemical compounds such as polychlorinated biphenyls and pesticides can lead to increase of T 3 in blood by altering 5 -deiodinase activity in fish (Besselink et al, 1996;Adams et al, 2000;Coimbra et al, 2005;Picard-Aitken et al, 2007;Peter et al, 2009;Yu et al, 2011;Guo and Zhou, 2013;Yu et al, 2013). In this study, the observed increase in plasma T 3 level may be a response to maintenance of the basal metabolic rate of the fish to ensure its survival.…”
