“…Since IgE level is not elevated in all atopic dermatitis patients [34], IgE abnormality may be a marker for a subgroup responding worse to psychological treatment. For instance, Scheich et al [36]found that an elevated level of serum IgE was associated with increased emotional irritability in atopic dermatitis patients. Further prospective studies are needed to elucidate the importance of serum IgE level for the discrimination of subgroups in terms of psychological characteristics and responsiveness to psychological treatment.…”

“…High liability was shown to be typical for adults with atopic dermatitis (Scheich et al, 1993). One study, performed with a large sampling (n = 11,540), has shown that high extra-version is a risk factor for asthma in women (Huovinen et al, 2001).…”

“…The idea that anxiety levels in AD sufferers might be related to the ease of showing a learned scratch response may be of clinical relevance since scratching is considered as a core symptom of AD. Recently, Scheich et al [31]have demonstrated higher excitability, lower adequate stress coping and a more suspicious/paranoid attitude in AD patients when compared to another group of chronically ill, but not atopic patients (chronic obstructive bronchitis). Most interestingly, the personality differences between AD patients and patients with chronic obstructive bronchitis were most pronounced for the AD patient subsample with rather high IgE levels (IgE levels >100 IU/ml) but not for AD patients with normal IgE concentrations (IgE levels <100 IU/ml).…”

“…The authors concluded that AD sufferers have more stressful relationships with significant others which may increase their everyday problems and their everyday stress level [36]. Inadequate coping skills, recently described in AD patients, can further make sufferers more liable to be stressed by the various situations they have to face [31]. …”
