Abstract: The present research designed to assess the protective role of Salvia officinalis essential oil (SO) against carbon tetrachloride (CCl)-induced liver and kidney damage in mice. This is evidenced by estimation of antiradical scavenging activity of SO using DPPH assay, biochemical markers, histological investigation of liver and kidney sections, and comet assay. Mice were given CCl (1.2 mL/kg for 24 h or 0.8 mL/kg for 2 weeks, 3 times/week) and with or without SO (0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 mL/kg, for 2 week, 5 times/wee… Show more

“…These results agreed with AbdAlah et al,(2018)who investigated the effect of Purslane on kidney failure affected by copper toxicity in a rat model. They found thatPurslane administration decreased the elevated level of creatinine and BUN in rats which received toxic levels of copper due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The results agreed with Fahmy et al,(2018) who ensured the protective role of Salvia officinalis essential oil (SO) against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver and kidney damage in mice. The effect may occur via the antioxidant defense mechanism which in part related to the complexity of its chemical constituents.…”

“…DNA damage was evaluated by the alkaline version of single-cell electrophoresis (comet assay, pH > 13) as previously described [ 24 ]. Briefly, fresh liver and kidney tissues were washed and homogenized in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) containing 20 mM EDTA (pH 7.5).…”

“…The hepatoprotective effects of sage essential oil have been investigated by several research groups since the plant is claimed to be curative in nature with context to hepatoprotection, and is still used as part of the traditional medicament for cure and protection of liver-related disorders in several quarters [ 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 ]. Previous reports describing the cytotoxic activities of sage essential oils are also available [ 33 , 34 , 35 ].…”
