Abstract: Despite the importance of the senescence processes in plants, our knowledge on regulatory mechanisms of senescence is still poor. WRKY transcription factors have been shown to be involved in the regulation of leaf senescence. However, almost nothing is known about the upstream regulation of the senescence specific expression of WRKY factors. Therefore, we characterized proteins that bind and activate the promoter of WRKY53, which participates in leaf senescence in Arabidopsis thaliana. Surprisingly, a mitogen … Show more

“…Similar screens employing the AtWRKY53 promoter led to the identification of a MAP kinase kinase kinase (MEKK1). Interestingly, MEKK1 was also shown to interact with and to phosphorylate AtWRKY53 (Miao et al, 2007). The in vivo relevance of these interactions with respect to plant defense, however, remains to be tested.…”

“…H 2 O 2 was found to induce reporter gene expression driven by the ^ítohvRP= promoter in protoplasts prepared from wild type plants. In contrast, this induction was abolished in protoplasts prepared from ^ítohvRP= knockout lines, indicating that the AtWRKY53 protein is directly involved in the positive regulation of genes that respond to H 2 O 2 (Miao et al, 2007).…”

“…For instance, AtWRKY53 and its regulators are controlled by hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) (Miao et al, 2007;. Cellular levels of ROS have been positively correlated with the severity of leaf senescence in ^ê~ÄáÇçéëáë and oilseed rape (Bieker et al, 2012).…”

“…At later stages of senescence WRKY53 expression was and CAT2 genes in flag leaf of wheat during monocarpic senescence required for the continued expression of SAGs and was controlled by ethylene responsive factors (Koyama et al 2013). Regulator of WRKY53 expression and DNA binding of corresponding protein itself is involved in signal transduction from H 2 O 2 to WRKY53 promoter (Miao et al 2007). Expression of WRKY53 induced rapidly in Arabidopsis on treatment with H 2 O 2 .…”
