Carbon quantum dots: synthesis, characterization, and assessment of cytocompatibility

Abstract: A simple method for the synthesis of water-soluble carbon quantum dots (CQDs) has been developed by chemical oxidation treatment of the flour. The as-synthesized CQDs were monodispersed sphere particles with the approximate diameter of 5-8 nm, and exhibited strong fluorescence, excitation-dependent photoluminescence behavior and high photostability in a wide range of pH values. We investigated the cytotoxicity of as-prepared CQDs using rat mesangial cells (RMC). Compared with CdTe quantum dots, CQDs show no ap… Show more

“…This allowed us to shed more light on the cytotoxicity issue. The existing literature data that have been reported differ considerably in cell lines used, concentrations, and incubation times [ 4 , 34 , 38 , 39 ]. It has been suggested by other researchers that carbon dots toxicity and cellular internalization may vary in different cell types, which is underpinned by various mechanisms of uptake and intracellular processing [ 7 , 8 , 39 , 40 , 41 ].…”

“…Studies related to cytotoxicity of C-dots have been conducted by different scientists, organizations, and institutes, but only a few results and reports are present right now. Zhang et al 18 investigated the cytotoxicity of carbon QDs on rat mesangial cells. No apparent cytotoxicity and much better biosafety properties of C-dots were reported for biologic fluorescent probe applications.…”

“…61 CDs have excellent water solubility 62 and are more environmentally friendly and much safer for biological use than most traditional quantum dots and heavy metal ions. 63,64 It was shown that after intravenous injection, 35 nm CDs accumulate in the reticuloendothelial system and kidney, and then they are gradually excreted both renally and fecally. A dose of 20 mg kg À1 appears safe to use in experimental animals over a period of 3 months.…”
