“…Without a complete and thorough understanding of osteoporosis, motivation to prevent the disease is stalled. In the current study, as well as in other studies, participants believe osteoporosis is an old woman's disease (Beaton et al, 2012;Minns Lowe et al, 2019) and something they do not need to think about until much later in life. Like the Besser et al (2012) study, because they felt osteoporosis did not affect them, it was not something they thought about.…”

“…Further, conditions such as hypogonadism which can increase fracture risk are linked themselves, with mental ill-health in men [ 27 ]. In a study exploring males experience of having osteoporotic vertebral fractures, osteoporosis was perceived as an old women’s disease [ 28 ]. A gendered societal view of fractures relating to osteoporosis/low bone mineral density (BMD) can cause a threat to masculinity, leading to avoidance of seeking help or consulting healthcare practitioners [ 28 30 ], disbelief and difficulty discussing with others.…”

A gendered societal view of fractures relating to osteoporosis/low bone mineral density (BMD) can cause a threat to masculinity, leading to avoidance of seeking help or consulting healthcare practitioners [ 28 30 ], disbelief and difficulty discussing with others. This relates to research on males with chronic pain who reported that they avoided seeking health care, and expectations of being ‘stronger’ or more ‘able to cope’ were prevalent in those who self-harmed [ 31 ].…”
