A queueing system with a single server providing two stages of service in succession is considered. Every customer receives service in the first stage and in the sequel he decides whether to proceed to the second phase of service or to depart and join a retrial box from where he repeats the demand for a special second stage service after a random amount of time and independently of the other customers in the retrial box. When the server becomes idle, he departs for a single vacation of an arbitrarily distributed length. The arrival process is assumed to be Poisson and all service times are arbitrarily distributed. For such a system the stability conditions and the system state probabilities are investigated both in a transient and in a steady state. A stochastic decomposition result is also presented. Numerical results are finally obtained and used to investigate system performance.

The author concerned the reliability evaluation as well as queueing analysis of M 1 , M 2 /G 1 , G 2 /1 retrial queues with two different types of primary customers arriving according to independent Poisson flows. In the case of blocking, the first type of customers can be queued whereas the second type of customers must leave the service area but return after some random period of time to try their luck again. The author assumes that the server is unreliable and it has a service-type dependent, exponentially distributed life time as well as a service-type dependent, generally distributed repair time. The necessary and sufficient condition for the system to be stable is investigated. Using a supplementary variable method, the author obtains a steady-state solution for queueing measures, and the transient as well as the steady-state solutions for reliability measures of interest.

A retrial queueing system with two types of batch arrivals, called type I and type II customers, is considered. Type I customers and type II customers arrive in batches of variable sizes according to two different Poisson processes. Service time distributions are identical and independent and are different for both types of customers. If the arriving customers are blocked due to the server being busy, type I customers are queued in a priority queue of infinite capacity, whereas type II customers enter into a retrial group in order to seek service again after a random amount of time. A type I customer who has received service departs the system with a preassigned probability or returns to the priority queue for reservice with the complement probability. A type II call who has received service leaves the system with a preassigned probability or rejoins the retrial group with complement probability. For this model, the joint distribution of the number of customers in the priority queue and in the retrial group is obtained in a closed form. Some particular models and operating characteristics are obtained. A numerical study is also carried out.
