Abstract: In recent years, endothelial dysfunction has been identified as an early feature of atherosclerosis. Endothelial function can be measured noninvasively by using brachial artery ultrasound. A variety of factors associated with atherosclerosis also impair endothelial function. Some of these factors are lipoproteins such as various forms of low‐density lipoproteins, postprandial chylomicron remnants, fasting triglyceride‐rich particles, and free fatty acids. A high‐fat diet also has an adverse effect on endotheli… Show more

“…Changes in blood vessel function occur very early in the development of AVD, 1 before the development of atherosclerotic plaques, and all known risk factors for AVD are also associated with impaired vessel function. 2 Furthermore, forearm blood vessel function has been shown to be associated with coronary artery function, suggesting that forearm measures may serve as a useful surrogate marker of more general vascular function. 3 Based on this, it is plausible that a sensitive measure of blood vessel function could provide an integrated measure of overall atherosclerotic risk factor burden and may be associated with cognitive function.…”

“…Furthermore, all known risk factors for AVD are also associated with impaired vascular function. 6 Lastly, forearm vascular function has been shown to be associated with coronary artery function. 7 Taken together, these facts suggest that forearm vascular function is reflective of more general vascular health and might be used as an integrated measure of overall atherosclerotic risk factor burden to be examined in relation to other aspects of health, including cognition.…”

“…This effect probably was mediated through restoration of nitric oxide activity. 31 Response to yohimbine was not dependent on patient age. Patients who showed a positive response had fewer medical risk factors overall, although the small number of patients was not large enough to provide statistical significance.…”
