A Strategy for Producing Pure Single‐Layer Graphene Sheets Based on a Confined Self‐Assembly Approach

Abstract: Carbon sandwich: When a pyrrole‐containing surfactant is polymerized between layers of silica (see picture; pyrrole is red), subsequent carbonization and removal of the silica template yields large, pure, single‐layer graphene sheets. The procedure, which employs mild conditions, is controllable and can be used to produce micrometer‐sized graphene sheets on a gram scale.

“…GO has a strong peak at 2θ=10.1°, corresponding to the (001) plane with interplanar spacing of 0.87 nm [18] , which couldn't be observed here. Instead, from Fig.2(A), the broad peak around 2θ=24.6° marked with asterisk shows up, indicating GO has been reduced to rGO [19] . The diffraction peaks of the as-synthesized product at 2θ=18.…”

“…A bottom-up technique also has been developed by Li and co-workers for synthesizing processible CCG. [ 36 ] In the process, a special structure-directing surfactant containing a pyrrole moiety was used as the starting material to construct lamellar mesostructured silica. Between the lamellar silica frameworks, the pyrrole moieties were densely packed in a controlled fashion within confi ned 2D spaces.…”

“…In bottom-up processes, graphene is synthesized by a variety of methods such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD), 45,46 arc discharge, 47 epitaxial growth on SiC, 48 chemical conversion, 49 reduction of CO, 50 unzipping carbon nanotubes 51,52 and self-assembly of surfactants. 53 The CVD approach to produce graphene relies on dissolving carbon into metal surfaces, such as Ni and Cu that act as catalysts 54,55 and then forcing it to separate by cooling the metal. The thickness and crystalline ordering of the precipitated carbon are controlled by the cooling rate and by the concentration of carbon dissolved in the metal.…”
