Radiofrequency Identification and Surface Acoustic Wave Technologies for Developing the Food Intelligent Packaging Concept

The food intelligent packaging (IP) technologies are reviewed with a particular emphasis on the possibilities of radiofrequency identification (RFID) and surface acoustic wave (SAW) technologies for developing the food IP concept. Passive RFID and SAW technologies are the more promising ones to achieve a food IP that can wirelessly communicate the food quality to the different agents of the food chain. However, some drawbacks and cost of these technologies are limiting their massive use in food IP. This is the reason why a lot of research works are being currently performed that focus on increasing functionality (e.g., enabling the tag antenna as a sensing device) and reducing costs of components and materials of these RFID and SAW systems. Furthermore, benefits can be also achieved by means of integrating the RFID, SAW, and other sensing technologies. The RFID and SAW technologies can be embedded in a wireless sensor network (WSN), and the corresponding tags and readers can build more intelligent networks by sharing the sensing, logic, and transmission capabilities of the sensor networks. The above two technologies can be integrated in two different ways: sensor-enabled tags-RFID or SAW (or RFID or SAW sensor tags)-and RFID and/or SAW-embedded WSN. The application of these technologies on secondary packages, as the paperboard packages, can dilute the costs of application on primary packaging and allow the massive use of these technologies in the food supply chain.

Initiatives to lightweight and reduce packaging materials to achieve sustainability goals have created unit load stability challenges in the transportation and handling of palletized packaged goods. Consequently, an increased focus is being placed on evaluating how current pre-shipment performance tests evaluate load stability. This study was undertaken to address the current need for establishing test methodologies towards observing a unit load's overall stability during transportation and handling related activities commonly experienced in the distribution environment. With this goal, this study developed two test methods as well as apparatus/measuring tool to observe a palletized load's overall stability. The experimentation involved unit loads of bottled water assembled using two commonly used stacking and stretch wrap patterns. Testing conditions for existing test procedures as well as personnel safety issues during testing were also considered and all tests were conducted in triplicate. The test methods developed included a "tilt test" which was designed to replicate the gravitational forces exerted on the unit load and an "incline impact test" designed to replicate the effect of short duration shocks experienced by unit loads. Collectively, the two test methods provide valuable test procedures and insight towards understanding a unit load's response to shocks and shifts commonly experienced during distribution related activities. The data collected from these tests should contribute to potential revisions for International Safe Transit Association's (ISTA) Procedures 3B and 3E testing requirements. Packaging engineers should be able to appropriately develop and/or validate unit loads of packaged goods utilizing the new test methods.

There are three main factors affecting the stability of a palletized load that is unitized by a stretch wrapping mechanism – the type of unitized load, wrapping configuration and shipping method. The wrapping configuration is typically determined on the basis of the type of unitized load and shipping method. For this study, the aforementioned components were referred to as the package, the product and the distribution environment. This study was designed to observe and understand the interactions between each of the components of the stretch wrap system. Prior to stretch wrapping a pallet of product, the film is elongated or prestretched. The elastic nature of the stretch wrap forces the film to conform to the palletized load. It is hypothesized that the containment force that the stretch wrap applies to the palletized load contributes to improved load containment. Hence, the objective of this study was to determine the existence of a correlation between percentage prestretch to change in containment force and load containment. For the study, a range of prestretched unitized loads were subjected to International Safe Transit Association 3E distribution testing. Simultaneously, the containment force was monitored during the period of distribution testing. Subsequent to distribution testing, the load dispersion was quantified. The data obtained from this test suggested that there is no correlation between percentage prestretch and change in containment force or load containment. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
