Director of Business Development

A growing problem in science is the poor reproducibility of scientific research. scite, a Brooklyn-based startup backed by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and leading private investors, is working to solve this problem by developing a platform for discovering and evaluating scientific articles via Smart Citations. Smart Citations allow users to see how a scientific paper has been cited by providing the context of the citation and a classification describing whether it provides supporting or disputing evidence for the cited claim.

We are looking for a Director of Business Development to help form strategic partnerships with key organizations and to build and execute a sales strategy for pharma/biotech, publishing, and other private markets. This role will be instrumental in developing our go to market plan as well as executing against it, so we are seeking a strategic thinker who also likes to implement.


  • Devise, plan, and lead sales and partnerships strategies
  • Identify new business and product opportunities
  • Create sales and marketing messages to create more effective sales collateral
  • Drive sales from prospecting to close


  • Passionate about improving scientific research
  • 5+ years of experience selling SaaS solutions to R&D (pharma/biotech, publishing, university, financial), required
  • Demonstrable history of leading sales teams and setting and meeting sales targets
  • Experience in a startup environment preferred
  • Curious, creative, driven team member
  • Strong communication and presentation skills to source and close sales
  • Our team is nearly fully remote so we are looking for individuals who are self-motivated and eager to take on a leading role at a growing startup
