Patent Search is a comprehensive patent discovery and analysis tool built directly into Scite's research platform. It provides access to millions of patent documents from major patent offices worldwide, including the USPTO, EPO, and WIPO, integrated seamlessly with Scite's existing publication database.

Unlike standalone patent databases that require separate subscriptions and specialized search expertise, Patent Search works within your existing Scite platform. While patent search operates independently from publication search, you can access both capabilities from a single account, giving you a complete view of both published research and intellectual property landscapes without juggling multiple tools or logins.

What Patent Search Does

Patent Search lets you discover and explore patent documents using search functionality that helps surface relevant patents even when they use varied terminology, so you can find connections across different ways of describing similar technologies.

When you search for patents related to "CRISPR gene editing," you'll find relevant patents that might describe the technology as "clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats" or "genome modification systems" without requiring you to anticipate every possible phrasing. The system understands semantic relationships between concepts.

Each search returns comprehensive patent information including titles, abstracts, full descriptions, filing dates, publication dates, inventors, assignees, patent offices, and classification codes. You can access complete patent documents directly from search results, eliminating the need to track down PDFs across multiple patent office websites.

Advanced filtering options let you refine searches by date ranges, specific patent offices, technology classifications (IPC and CPC codes), assignee organizations, and inventor names. This precision matters when you're conducting freedom-to-operate analysis, tracking competitor filing patterns, or identifying white space in crowded technology domains.

This foundation enables us to bring Scite's citation intelligence capabilities to patent data in the future, including Smart Citations analysis and deeper relationship mapping between patents and academic literature.

Access Patent Search through the Patents navigation option in Scite. The interface mirrors the publication search experience you already know, making adoption straightforward for existing users.

Enter your search query in the main search bar; this can be a technology term, research concept, company name, or inventor. Patent Search helps surface relevant results even when patents use different terminology than your query. Results appear with patent titles, abstracts, filing information, and assignee details.

Filtering & Refining Results

Use the filter panel to narrow results by date ranges, specific patent offices, assignee organizations, or patent classification codes, letting you focus on the most relevant subset of patents for your research needs.

Exploring Patent Details

Click any result to access the full patent page. Here you'll find comprehensive patent information including claims, detailed descriptions, inventor information, filing history, and other key metadata. Patent Search draws from an extensive patent data set, and we're continually expanding the information displayed based on customer feedback and research needs.

Understanding Patent Relationships

Having patents and publications in the same platform makes it easier to cross-reference commercial IP with academic research. Move between patent search and publication search within a single session to compare research trends with patenting activity or identify gaps between what's published and what's protected.

Patents In Scite Assistant

Patents in Scite Assistant adds patent data directly to Scite's AI-powered research environment. You can search both patents and academic literature together with a single prompt.

Inside any Assistant session, open the settings panel and navigate to Specify Evidence Source. You'll find three options: academic literature (the default, built on Scite's publisher agreements), patents only, or both combined in a single view. If you select both, your questions will draw from academic publications and the full patent dataset simultaneously.

This integration is especially useful because research and patents often reference each other. By asking one question across both sources, you can find connections without doing separate searches or manual cross-referencing. For example, if you ask about companies filing patents in a certain technology area, the answer will include inline citation context for both academic papers and individual patent documents (with a combined references panel that distinguishes between the two source types).
