While most research focuses on the clinical treatment of COVID-19, fewer studies have investigated individuals' responses towards this novel infectious disease. This study aims to report the temporal changes in individuals' psychological wellbeing, perceived discrimination, sociopolitical perceptions and information-seeking behaviours among the general public in Hubei, China. Data were obtained from a two-wave survey of 1902 respondents aged 18–80 in Hubei province during the peak and mitigation stages of the outbreak. The results showed that the prevalence of psychological distress dropped from over 75% to around 15% throughout the study period, but perceived discrimination remained stable. Female, middle-aged, well-educated respondents and those employed in government/public institutions/state-owned enterprises tended to report more distress. While respondents' attention on COVID-19 information kept high and stable, their sources of information diversified across different sociodemographic groups. Over time, people obtained more social support from neighbourhoods than from their friends and relatives or non-government organisations. Over 80% of respondents were satisfied with the performance of the central government, which was notably higher than their ratings on the local government and neighbourhood/village committees. The findings of this research are informative for formulating effective intervention strategies to tackle various psychosocial problems during COVID-19.
VIP appears to play an important role in visual development, and its mRNA expression is affected by visual experiences. Visual dysfunction may down-regulate the expression of VIP-mRNA by impairing the structure and function of the neurons in the visual cortex, finally leading to amblyopia.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate whether SOX2 gene variants were associated with high myopia in a Chinese population. Methods: This study is conducted using case-control association analysis. This study recruited 83 healthy controls (with binocular spherical equivalent between –0.50 and +0.50 D) and 117 high myopia cases (spherical equivalent > –6.00 D in both eyes). Three single-nucleotide polymorphisms were selected from HapMap database for genotyping by direct sequencing. Statistical software (SPSS 22.0) was used for statistical analysis. The chi-square test was used to examine the difference in the frequency between cases and controls. Results: Genotype distributions in the three single-nucleotide polymorphisms were all in accordance with the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. The differences of rs4575941 locus genotype frequency and allele frequency between the case group and the control group were statistically significant (p = .043 and p = .029, respectively). The rs4575941 allele G frequency in the high myopia group was significantly higher than that in the control group with an odds ratio value of 1.579. However, the value of a chi-square test for the trend was 0.029, and after Bonferroni test, the p value was .087. Conclusion: In Chinese population, rs4575941 in SOX2 gene was likely to play some roles in the genetic susceptibility to high myopia; the rs4575941 allele G might be a risk gene for high myopia.
Purpose
The present study compared the expression of early growth responsive gene-1 (Egr-1) in visual cortex between amblyopia kittens and normal kittens, and to explore the role of Egr-1 in the pathogenesis of amblyopia.
Methods
A total of 20 healthy kittens were randomly divided into deprivation group and control group with 10 kittens in each group. Raised in natural light, and covered the right eye of the deprived kittens with a black opaque covering cloth. Pattern visual evoked potentials (PVEP) were measured before and at the 1st, 3rd and 5th week after covering in all kittens. After the last PVEP test, all kittens were killed. The expression of Egr-1 in the visual cortex of the two groups was compared by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization.
Results
PVEP detection showed that at the age of 6 and 8 weeks, the P100 wave latency in the right eye of deprivation group was higher than that in the left eye of deprivation group (P < 0.05) and the right eye of control group (P < 0.05), while the amplitude decreased (P < 0.05). The number of positive cells (P < 0.05) and mean optical density (P < 0.05) of Egr-1 protein expression in visual cortex of 8-week-old deprivation group were lower than those of normal group, as well as the number (P < 0.05) and mean optical density of Egr-1 mRNA-positive cells (P < 0.05).
Conclusions
Monocular form deprivation amblyopia can lead to the decrease of Egr-1 protein and mRNA expression in visual cortex, and then promote the occurrence and development of amblyopia.
