CdS/g-C3N4 core/shell nanowires with different g-C3N4 contents were fabricated by a combined solvothermal and chemisorption method and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and UV-vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy. The photocatalytic hydrogen-production activities of these samples were evaluated using Na2S and Na2SO3 as sacrificial reagents in water under visible-light illumination (λ≥420 nm). The results show that after a spontaneous adsorption process g-C3N4 is successfully coated on CdS nanowires with intimate contact and can significantly improve the photocatalytic hydrogen-production rate of CdS nanowires, which reaches an optimal value of up to 4152 μmol h(-1) g(-1) at the g-C3N4 content of 2 wt %. More importantly, g-C3N4 coating can substantially reinforce the photostability of CdS nanowires even in a nonsacrificial system. The synergic effect between g-C3N4 and CdS, which can effectively accelerate the charge separation and transfer corrosive holes from CdS to robust C3N4, was proposed to be responsible for the enhancement of the photocatalytic activity and photostability. The possible conditions necessary for the synergic effect to work in a CdS/g-C3N4 core/shell configuration is also discussed.

Background: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a common neurodegenerative disease in which the brain undergoes alterations for decades before symptoms become obvious. Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) have self-complain of persistent decline in cognitive function especially in memory but perform normally on standard neuropsychological tests. SCD with the presence of AD pathology is the transitional stage 2 of Alzheimer’s continuum, earlier than the prodromal stage, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which seems to be the best target to research AD. In this study, we aimed to detect the transformational patterns of the intrinsic brain activity as the disease burden got heavy.Method: In this study, we enrolled 44 SCD, 55 amnestic MCI (aMCI), 47 AD dementia (d-AD) patients and 57 normal controls (NC) in total. A machine learning classification was utilized to detect identification accuracies between groups by using ALFF, fALFF, and fusing ALFF with fALFF features. Then, we measured the amplitude of the low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and fractional ALFF (fALFF) levels in three frequency bands (classic: 0.01–0.1 Hz; slow-5: 0.01–0.027 Hz; and slow-4: 0.027–0.073 Hz) and compared alterations in patients with NC.Results: In the machine learning verification, the identification accuracy of SCD, aMCI, d-AD from NC was higher when fused ALFF and fALFF features (76.44, 81.94, and 91.83%, respectively) than only using ALFF or fALFF features. Several brain regions showed significant differences in ALFF/fALFF within these bands among four groups: brain regions presented decreasing trend of values, including the Cingulum_Mid_R (aal), bilateral inferior cerebellum lobe, bilateral precuneus, and the Cingulum_Ant_R (aal); increasing trend of values were detected in the Hippocampus_L (aal), Frontal_Mid_Orb_R (aal), Frontal_Sup_R (aal) and Paracentral_Lobule_R (aal) as disease progressed. The normalized ALFF/fALFF values of these features were significantly correlated with the neuropsychological test scores.Conclusion: This study revealed gradual disturbances in intrinsic brain activity as the disease progressed: the normal objective performance in SCD may be dependent on compensation; as disease advanced, the cognitive function gradually impaired and decompensated in aMCI, severer in d-AD. Our results indicated that the ALFF and fALFF may help detect the underlying pathological mechanism in AD continuum.Clinical Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, identifier NCT02353884 and NCT02225964.

Here we reported the antibacterial effect and related mechanism of three nano-Mg(OH)(2) slurries using Escherichia coli as model bacteria. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and laser particle size analysis revealed that the as-synthesized Mg(OH)(2)_(MgCl2), Mg(OH)(2)_(MgSO4) and Mg(OH)(2)_(MgO) are all composed by nanoflakes with different sizes, and their aggregates in water are 5.5, 4.5, and 1.2 μm, respectively. Bactericidal tests showed that the antibacterial efficiency is conversely correlated with the size of Mg(OH)(2) aggregates. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation have not provided evidence of cellular internalization, however, the antibacterial effect is positive correlation to the loss of integrity of cell walls. SEM and zeta potential analysis revealed that the adhering ability of Mg(OH)(2) on the bacterial surface is Mg(OH)(2)_(MgCl2) > Mg(OH)(2)_(MgSO4) > Mg(OH)(2)_(MgO), indicating the toxicity of Mg(OH)(2) may be caused by the electrostatic interaction-induced external adsorption. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) further revealed that the adhering of Mg(OH)(2) on the bacterial surface could increase the permeability of cell membranes. Taken together, the antibacterial mechanism of nano-Mg(OH)(2) could be as follows: nano-Mg(OH)(2) adsorbed on the bacterial surface by charge attraction first, and then destroyed the integrity of cell walls, which resulting in the final death of bacteria.
