The aim of the study was to examine the effect of proprioceptive and strength exercises applied in addition to dance exercises on the endurance of calf muscles, balance and ankle angles. Participants were randomly divided into two groups as Training Group (n=14; 7 males, 7 females) and Control Group (n=13; 7 males, 6 females). The training group performed a 12-week training programme that included proprioceptive and strength exercises twice a week, just before dance training. Anthropometric measures, static-dynamic balance tests, single heel rise test and 3D kinematic tests were conducted. When the groups were compared, significant changes were observed in the double leg dynamic balance values of the training group, right leg dynamic balance values of the control group, and left leg dynamic balance values of both groups (p<0.05). When ankle angles were compared, the first single heel rise and angle of movement of the last single heel rise values of the training group differed significantly (p<0.05). The balance performance and calf muscle endurance of the dancers can be improved with proprioceptive and strength training, which can contribute positively to movements during the dance.
The objective of the present study is to investigate the effects of ten-weeks heart rate variability biofeedback training on the basketball skill, free throw, and heart rate variability parameters. We aimed to increase vagal activation and to assess its effects on basketball performance and heart rate variability parameters. Twenty-four basketball players (experimental, n=12 and control, n=12) aged 18–24 volunteered to participate in this study. The experimental group participated in a ten-weeks heart rate variability biofeedback and basketball training program, while the control group participated only in a ten-weeks basketball training session. Basketball free-throw performance, basketball skills, and heart rate variability tests were applied to the experimental and control groups before and after ten-weeks of the intervention. We found that basketball free-throw performance, breathing frequency and heart rate variability parameters that reflect vagal modulation of parasympathetic activity improved in participants who underwent the ten-weeks heart rate variability biofeedback and basketball training, and not in those who underwent basketball training only. Finding suggest that heart rate variability biofeedback, along with basketball workouts, may contribute to better basketball free-throw performance potentially via improved autonomic nervous system functioning.

Public parks and gardens are gaining numerous outdoor fitness equipment (OFE), easily accessed by the public. Most people use this equipment without any guidance and thus there is a need for basic guidelines on how to use the equipment. This study offers a practical guideline for exercising on one of the most widely used pieces of OFE, the outdoor stepping machine (OSM). Thirty-four healthy adults (nine females, 25 males) participated in workouts of three separate stepping exercises at different intensities, controlled by stepping cadence. At each 5-minute phase, rated perceived exertion (RPE), oxygen consumption (VO2), metabolic equivalent of task (MET) and heart rate (HR) were measured. Corresponding MET values of exercise cadences were calculated to be 5.3 at 80 steps.min−1, 6.0 at 96 steps.min−1 and 6.6 at 112 steps.min−1. Mean values for RPE at each stepping cadence were 9.1 (very light), 11.9 (moderate) and 14.8 (difficult), respectively. In conclusion, when the ACSM’s guidelines for indoor stepper machine (ISM) were taken as a reference, 80 steps.min−1 were suitable for warm-up, 96 and 112 steps.min−1 were appropriate for moderate exercise. People exercising on OSMs could easily use the cadence or the RPE scale as a guideline to exercise at the desired intensity.
