An experimental technique has been devised which allows in situ sampling of electrolyte from a functioning
normalLi‐SOCl2
cell, followed by rapid FTIR analysis for soluble reaction products. Disulfur monoxide
false(S2Ofalse)
is observed as an intermediate discharge product. The half‐life of
S2O
is estimated to be about 20 min. The presence of
S2O
is consistent with sulfur chemistry, as well as the accepted stoichiometry of the
normalLi‐SOCl2
battery system. A possible safety hazard for low temperature discharges of
normalLi‐SOCl2
cells is identified.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
