I Chemically, the compound is 3-(a-phenyl-acetylethyl)-4-hydroxycoumarin or 3-(a-acetonylbenzyl)-4-hydroxycomnin. Both names have been approved by Chemical Abstracts but the latter is the one currently in use. During its trial period the compound was known as compound 42 or W.A.R.F.-42. It was called dd42"I becuse it stood 42d in a table in one of the original publications (1). The initials "W.A.R.F." and the first letters of the name, warfarin, stand for the Wisoonsin Alumni Research Foundation which owns the patent (No. 2,427,5784 September 16, 1947). a The warfarin employed in these studies was supplied through the kindness of the Wisconsin Alumini Research Foundation. It was the pure enolic form and not the 0.5 percent dilution in starch which is currently available.
