Resumo O Programa de Ensino Integral Paulista (PEI) foi lançado em 2012 com um discurso de valorização da profissão docente e da promoção de uma nova forma de organização escolar na rede de ensino público paulista. Este artigo tem como objetivo problematizar os avanços, desafios e retrocessos que o PEI tem gerado ao trabalho docente, por meio de um estudo de caso realizado no município de Votorantim/SP. Para fundamentar essa discussão foi realizada uma análise documental das normas que fundamentam o programa, a observação participativa da escola analisada e entrevistas semiestruturadas com a equipe gestora e com os professores que atuam na unidade. Com a análise construída, foi possível constatar que, apesar das melhorias salariais e da existência de mais espaço para a socialização de experiências, tem ocorrido a intensificação do trabalho docente. Outros pontos negativos destacados foram: a introdução da lógica neogerencialista de vigilância entre os pares no interior do ambiente escolar; o estímulo à adaptação curricular (limitação da autonomia docente) em detrimento de sua problematização e a transformação e o abismo criado entre as condições pedagógicas, físicas e humanas ofertadas nas escolas do PEI e nas demais escolas da rede pública de ensino paulista, agravando, assim, as desigualdades educacionais e a fragmentação da profissão docente.
