Con el propósito de mejorar la formación de los profesionales de salud en América Latina, la Fundación W. K. Kellogg convocó a universidades de varios países a presentar proyectos que integraran las respectivas facultades del área de la salud, los servicios públicos de salud de la zona de influencia y las organizaciones comunitarias que allí actuaran. Así, a lo largo de la década del 90 se desarrolló el Programa UNI (Una Nueva Iniciativa en la Educación de los Profesionales de la Salud: Unión con la Comunidad) Este artículo concentra su mirada en el componente comunitario de esos proyectos y se basa en los resultados obtenidos en el Estudio Especial de Comunidad¹ realizado en el marco del Programa de Apoyo a los proyectos UNI. Un aspecto central y decisivo del Programa UNI ha sido el esfuerzo de cooperación entre tres actores: Universidades, Servicios de Salud y Comunidad que se asociaron, para apoyar procesos de cambios paralelos en las instituciones que cada actor social representaba y en las ciudades en las que cada proyecto se ejecutó. La evaluación que se realizó puso el eje de la observación en la "orilla de la población" y sus organizaciones, tratando de identificar las condiciones que facilitan la construcción de la ciudadanía, la imagen de superación intergeneracional que pueden alcanzar los integrantes de la comunidad, y en los cambios en las condiciones de vida, que fueron las tres dimensiones consideradas por la propia comunidad, como las relevantes para ser evaluadas.
