ABSTRACT. This study aimed to evaluate the treatment of a synthetic textile wastewater containing the blue indigo dye in a UASB (upflow anaerobic reactor), on a bench scale, followed by pottery clay adsorption. The system monitoring was verified by the following physical and chemical parameters: pH, alkalinity, volatile acids, COD and removal of color. The adsorption tests using pottery clay (construction debris) as an alternative adsorbent material were performed on a jar test equipment. The results showed satisfactory effectiveness in removing color and organic matter (COD) by the UASB, at the order of 69 and 81.2%, respectively. The color removal using ceramic clay as an alternative adsorbent material was 97% for the concentration of 200 g L -1of adsorbent, evidencing that the use of pottery clay as adsorbent material had significant and promising results, and may be used as a post-treatment unit for removal of dyes present in textile effluents, and since construction debris currently represents a major environmental problem, its use in wastewater treatment may become an alternative to a proper destination of this waste. Keywords: UASB reactor, adsorption, Indigo Blue dye, pottery clay.
The consumption of water that has a high level of fluoride can result in dental or skeletal fluorosis, which causes changes in the teeth and bones. Thus, this study aimed to verify the efficiency of the reduction of fluoride in groundwater using coagulation with extracts of Moringa oleifera Lam seeds (MO) combined with microfiltration. Coagulation/flocculation tests were carried out in Jar test with different concentrations of the coagulant and subsequent treatment of water by microfiltration membranes. The concentration of fluoride in water was adjusted to 5 mgF‐/L and pH set to 7.0. The test used 1.5 g/L of the coagulant MO, for a 3 mgF‐/L initial concentration of fluoride and pH 3.0 proved effective for the removal of fluoride, colour, and turbidity of water with residual amounts of 1.07 mgF‐/L, 19 mgPt‐Co/L, and 3 NTU, respectively. The best results were obtained using 5 g/L of the coagulant MO and 2 bar pressure in the microfiltration step. Under these conditions, the final water quality complies with the recommendations of the Brazilian legislation, with residual fluoride at 1.2 mgF‐/L, 1.56 NTU turbidity and 8.56 mgPt‐Co/L colour. These results indicate the potential of the proposed treatment and that this represents an alternative for reducing excessive fluoride from water by combining the use of a natural and biodegradable coagulant with microfiltration processes, which contributes to the final quality of water.
The tests were performed on equipment "jar test", being the MO, used in the form of aqueous extract at concentrations of 1. 5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 g/L. Water samples consisted of deionized water with fluorine with NaF at concentrations of 3.0 and 5.0 mg F/L and pH neutral, aimed at simulating groundwater problems of excess fluoride. The monitoring system proposed treatment was verified through the analysis of fluoride, pH, turbidity, apparent color and conductivity. The results showed good values of fluoride reduction efficiency, and for the initial concentrations of 5 and 3 mg F/L, the residual fluoride were 1.20 and 1.69 mg/L, 60 and 66 % respectively, removal for the concentration of 5.0 g/L of MO, these values within and around the maximum value established by Ordinance N o . 2,914\/MS 2011 (1.5 mg F/L) for the waters intended for human consumption. The final pH values were within the range of neutrality, while for the values of the parameters of colour, turbidity and conductivity end, there has been an increase proportional to the concentration of MO used. Generally speaking, the process of coagulation/ flocculation with extracts of MO, proved to be as a good al...
