La France du Levant est une expression originellement inventée aux environs de 1900 par des personnalités du milieu catholique et missionnaire français afin d'exalter le dynamisme civilisateur des établissements congrégationnistes installés dans l'Empire ottoman, les Balkans et l'Egypte. Les milieux patriotes et républicains expansionnistes s'en emparent rapidement pour donner un nom générique à la géographie de la francophonie orientale. Au-delà des réalités de l'influence française dans cette région, de nombreuses personnalités publiques voient dans la France du Levant l'une des illustrations les plus efficaces de l'originalité impériale française. Toutefois, le cadre exclusivement métropolitain de cette réflexion, les bouleversements en cours dans les sociétés orientales (avec l'apparition des idéologies nationales) et les modifications des modes d'influence des puissances dans l'Empire ottoman condamnent cette France du Levant à n'être qu'un schéma théorique sans appropriation réelle de la part de ceux qui décident de l'action extérieure du pays.
