O Brasil vem apresentando um processo de transição em sua estrutura demográfica, onde se evidencia a queda da natalidade e o aumento da expectativa de vida. A presença da doença na vida das pessoas provoca novas ordenações de seus valores pessoais, objetivos de vida e percepções sobre o mundo. A necessidade dessas freqüentes mudanças na vida dos indivíduos e dos grupos sociais determina a elaboração de novas estratégias de enfrentamento na ordenação dos papéis sociais o que, por sua vez, dificulta a implementação de medidas preventivas e de promoção à saúde.

No Brasil, essa desordem metabólica vem sendo relacionada como um dos mais importantes fatores de risco para crianças, adultos e idosos. A utilização de serviços de saúde ocorre em função das necessidades e do comportamento dos indivíduos em relação aos seus problemas de saúde, assim como à disponibilidade de acesso ao sistema de saúde pública.
