La investigación presentada en este artículo pone a prueba operativamente un modelo teórico que concibe el pensamiento creador como un proceso de encontrar problemas. Basándonos en el estudio de Getzels y Csikszentmihalyi con estudiantes de Arte diseñamos una tarea figurativa adaptada a escolares de Educación Primaria considerando los condicionantes evolutivos propios de esta etapa. Se definieron 6 variables de encontrar problemas relativas a la fase de formulación del problema y a la fase de solución en las que cada niño de una muestra de 130 fue evaluado. La variable dependiente fue la creatividad del dibujo según la evaluación de jueces. De acuerdo con nuestros resultados, tan solo las variables de encontrar problemas en la fase de solución resultan moderadamente predictoras de la creatividad del producto de los niños. Alejamiento del modelo, introducir elementos nuevos y realizar composiciones originales son las conductas relacionadas con la apertura a los problemas que muestran la forma en que el modelo de encontrar problemas nos acerca a la explicación de la creatividad infantil según los resultados de nuestro estudio.
