Resumo Em meio à emergência da saúde como pauta do debate político nas primeiras décadas do século XX, Arthur Neiva e Belisário Penna viajaram pelo sertão goiano para diagnosticar o estado de saúde da população, destacando, sobretudo, a disseminação da doença de Chagas e a decadência do sertão. A elite política goiana reagiu ao diagnóstico dos sanitaristas. Este artigo acompanha a polêmica que ganhou as páginas da revista A Informação Goiana. O periódico assumiu a defesa dos interesses da região, pois seus articulistas estavam certos de que cabia aos goianos a missão de revelar a verdade sobre o sertão, sua gente e suas potencialidades.
RESUMOO presente artigo tem por objetivo analisar o cotidiano das viagens de médicos e frades pelo antigo norte de Goiás, entre . No momento em que instituições médicas e religiosas enviavam seus mais renomados representantes para o interior do Brasil, as narrativas de Artur Neiva e Belisário Penna (médicos/cientistas da Fundação Oswaldo Cruz) e dos frades dominicanos revelam a diversidade que constitui os brasileiros e as dificuldades enfrentadas pelos viajantes nos caminhos de Goiás. A partir da utilização de autores da história e da sociologia discutimos, inicialmente, os "caminhos" da pesquisa, ou seja, como transformar os restos do passado em documentos e analisá-los com propriedade. Concluimos que o olhar do narrador está marcado pelo seu tempo e pelo seu "lugar de fala", mais precisamente, pelas instituições que ajudaram a organizar as viagens e legitimaram suas publicações.Palavras-chave: Médicos, Frades, Goiás.
ABSTRACTThis study aims to analyze the daily trips of doctors and friars by former northern Goiás, between 1883-1912. At that moment religious and medical institutions sent their most renowned representatives to the interior of Brazil, the narratives of Arthur Neiva and Penna Belisario (doctors / scientists of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation) and the Dominican friars reveal the diversity that makes the Brazilians and the difficulties faced by travelers in the ways of Goiás based on the authors use of the history and sociology discussed initially, the "paths" of the research, ie, how to transform the remains of past documents and analyze them properly. We conclude that the gaze of the narrator is marked by its time and its "place of speech", more precisely, by the institutions that helped organize the trips and legitimized their publications.
