Reliquien zwischen Mittelalter und ModerneDer Reliquienkult gehört ohne Zweifel zu den befremdlichsten Phänomenen der mittelalterlichen Kultur. Im Vorwort zu seiner "Deutschen Mythologie" von 1844 fasst Jacob Grimm das neuzeitliche Unbehagen in einprägsame Worte:"Kirchen und kapellen des mittelalters durchweht mit schwülem grabgeruch ein anbeten todter knochen, deren echtheit und wunderkraft selten beglaubigt, zuweilen ganz unmöglich scheint. die wichtigsten geschäfte des lebens, eidschwüre und krankheiten, forderten berührung dieser heilthümer, und alle geschichtlichen denkmäler zeugen von ihrem weit eingerissenen, in den bibel durch nichts gerechtfertigten, dem frühesten christentum fremden gebrauch." 1 Grimms Worte spiegeln die Sicht eines preußischen Protestanten mit einer romantischen Vorliebe für nationale Ursprungsmythen, die er zeitgemäß im germanischen Heidentum, nicht im "römischen" Christentum zu finden glaubte. Sie formulieren aber zugleich ein Unbehagen an den Praktiken des vormodernen Heiligenkultes, das weit über seine Zeit und sein Milieu hinauswirkte. Selbst auf katholischer Seite empfand man spätestens seit dem 18. Jahrhundert das mittelalterliche Erbe als Bürde: Eine aufgeklärte kirchliche Obrigkeit schränkte zentrale Ausdrucksbereiche der Heiligenverehrung, so das Wallfahrts-und Prozessionswesen und die religiöse Festkultur, drastisch ein und eine Gruppe jesuitischer Intellektueller um den Hagiologen Jean Bolland sichtete und bereinigte mit den Mitteln historischer Kritik den christlichen Legendenbestand. Viele Praktiken und Rituale, die vorher zum selbstverständlichen Ausdrucksbestand der Heiligenverehrung gehört hatten, wurden nun als "Übertreibungen" und "Ausschreitungen", als Pervertierung einer geistigen Ursprungsidee gedeutet 2 und in den Bereich der "Volksfrömmigkeit" verbannt -ein Erklärungsparadigma, das selbst erst mit der aufgeklärten, rationalen Kritik an der vormodernen Frömmigkeit entstand. 3 1 Jacob Grimm, Deutsche Mythologie, Berlin 1875-78, Bd. 1 [Nachdruck der 4.
