IntroduçãoA placenta é órgão fetal, sendo esperada correlação entre os pesos placentário e do feto. Essa correlação varia entre 0,5 e 0,6, sugerindo capacidade independente de crescimento da placenta 1 . A extensão da superfície de troca do epitélio viloso do trofoblasto é uma das variáveis determinantes da eficiência da placenta como órgão de transferên-cia 2 . Alguns autores estudaram a área total de superfície de troca, por métodos morfométricos e estereológicos. Entretanto, é metodologia trabalhosa e de difícil execução rotineira 3 .A avaliação da extensão da superfície de troca pode ser feita, de maneira indireta, pela análi-se das características físicas da placenta humana. O peso, o volume e a densidade do órgão 4 são as mais indicadas.Vários trabalhos usando técnica de morfometria mostraram que os cotilédones centrais e periféricos possuem diferentes caracterís-ticas físicas 4,5 . O cálculo da densidade placentária deve mostrar relação com o peso do recém-nascido. Alguns trabalhos em outras áreas da ciência (ex., agronomia) relacionam a densidade de corpos com a sua função, principalmente porque a densidade avalia a quantidade de material existente no corpo 6 . Este aspecto pode ser interessante do ponto de vista clínico.A relação entre a densidade placentária e o peso fetal tem sido pouco estudada na literatura. Os resultados mostraram que a densidade placentária é menor no pré-termo quando comparada com o termo 7 .
