Chronic stool retention with soiling is a common and distressing condition in children. Diagnosis and treatment generally involve both medical and psychological aspects. This case addresses a potentially life-threatening complication of shock occurring during treatment of chronic stool retention with castor oil, and also explores the psychosocial factors felt to be contributory.
As the survival rate of children and adolescents who have experienced head injuries has improved, attention has turned to outcome, including cognitive, social and psychiatric problems. This article focuses on the evaluation and management of neuropsychiatric sequelae of severe head injuries occurring in childhood and adolescence. Medical management and psychotherapeutic interventions are discussed in the contexts of hospitalization and long-term follow-up at home and in the community.
