ZusammenfassungDie Wiederentdeckung Amerikas brachte uns Europäern einige heute sehr bekannte Arzneipflanzen, darunter die Kapuzinerkresse (Tropaeolum majus L., Arzneipflanze des Jahres 2013), die Passionsblume (Passiflora incarnata L., Arzneipflanze des Jahres 2011), die Sägepalme (Serenoa repens [W.Bartram] Small), den Purpur-Sonnenhut (Echinacea purpurea [L.] Moench) und auch die Virginische Zaubernuss (Hamamelis virginiana L.). Da die Zaubernuss sich bereits früh bei den europäischen Siedlern größerer Beliebtheit erfreute, lässt sich hier sehr gut die Übernahme der traditionellen Verwendung bei den Ureinwohnern sowie die sich entwickelnde kommerzielle Vermarktung und wissenschaftliche Erforschung im 19. Jahrhundert nachzeichnen. Ebenso sind der Sprung nach Europa ab den 1870er-Jahren und nachfolgende Entwicklungen gut zu verfolgen.

Jahrhundert, das in 77 Kapiteln die wichtigsten Arzneipflanzen der Zeit behandelt, ist der Allgemeinheit heute eher unbekannt, was nicht zuletzt daran liegen mag, dass es bereits relativ kurz nach seiner Entstehung in nahezu alle wichtigen europäischen Volkssprachen übertragen und noch im Mittelalter vielfach ungenannt in Kräuterbuch-Kompilationen eingearbeitet wurde. Während die Bedeutung des Werkes in seiner Gänze in der Neuzeit zunehmend verblasste, wurden zahlreiche Anwendungen noch über Jahrhunderte tradiert.
