AbstractSchool shooting phenomenon has attracted attention throughout the world, especially after the Columbine massacre in April, 1999. In that event, 12 people died and about 30 were hurt. Some years later, in April 2007, Cho Seung-Hui carried out an even more impressive deed, shooting and killing 32 people at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, USA. This article presents school shooting as a growing phenomenon that may happen anywhere and not just in the United States. A reflection based on empirical research is presented focusing the development of school shooters in their social contexts, including home environment, media influence, and inter-students interactions in High Schools and universities.
AbstractWe investigated the interaction between social learning factors measured by questionnaires and aggressive and playful behaviors of pre-school children, through direct observation during their playful break time. The subjects were 15 boys between four and six years old who were enrolled in a non-profit child care center in Goiânia-GO, Brazil. A multivariate analysis of variance indicated significant effects of aggressive models at home on aggression levels during playful behavior. Children exposed to abusive physical punishment, adult fighting and violent TV programs engaged in more episodes of aggression during playful breaks. Boys who reported to play with toy guns at home did not engage in aggressive behavior more often than those who did not, but they displayed a higher proportion of pretended aggression. Results also indicated that aggressive behavior becomes more frequent as the number of aggressive models at home increases. Keywords: Social learning; Aggressive behavior; Playful behavior. * Endereço para correspondência: Av. São João, 145, Res. Gloria Maison, Apto. 2502, Goiânia, GO, Brasil, CEP 74815-700.
The Aaron Beck Cognitive Therapy as Reflexivity in High Modernity:A Sociology of Knowledge ABSTRACT -A sociology of knowledge interprets the knowledge production as tied to social situations. Leaving from this epistemological premise, our paper objectified to interpret the Aaron Beck cognitive therapy as a knowledge that is both constructed and constructor of the phenomenon of reflexivity in high modernity, as interpreted by Anthony Giddens. Our hypothesis is that the reorientation of the customer's beliefs system, proposed by the cognitive therapy, is a form of reflexive reconstruction of self-identity aiming to surpass typical conflicts of the instability in high modernity. We designate some aspects in the cognitive therapy that identify it with reflexivity, over all the idea that the self-identity's construction is a task in which the individual engages reflexively. Keywords: cognitive therapy; reflexivity; high modernity; epistemology of psychology; sociology of knowledge.
