Men framför allt de radikalare grupperna är, sedan slutet av 1990-talet, nästan outforskade inom det akademiska fältet (till skillnad från det journalistiska). Det är en allvarlig brist, som forskarsamhället inte verkar kunna hantera på egen hand, och vi har därför på ideell basis försökt bidra genom att erbjuda en möjlighet att publicera ny forskning, både svensk och översatt.Den period som förflutit sedan vår första volym har varit dramatisk. Vi har sett högerextremismen flamma upp som en ny (eller rättare: nygammal) form av terrorism, och vi har sett rasismen på internet få just den betydelse som vi, tyckte vi då, lätt dystopiskt förutspådde. Mathias Wåg skildrade där (2010) hur den "identitära" grupperingen Nordiska förbundet byggde upp ett litet imperium av nätsidor med olika funktioner -Nordisk.nu, Motpol.nu, Metapedia och så vidare -som samlade och drillade en hel generation av högerextrema nätkrigare. Sedan dess har 8 arkiv | nr 2 | det vita fältet ii nya nätsidor, som Avpixlat och Fria tider, ofta med stark anknytning till Sverigedemokraterna, samt organiserade kampanjer i dagstidningarnas kommentarsfält hjälpt till att förskjuta diskussionsklimatet i en riktning som föranlett krav på lagändringar (Bjurwald 2013). Över hela Europa har högerpopulismen, eller den radikala (parlamentariska) högern, etablerats som en "patologisk normalitet", det vill säga ett politiskt tillstånd där den parlamentariska representationen av i grunden antidemokratiska högerextrema politiska partier ses som normalt (Scheuch & Klingemann 1967, s. 15). Högerpopulismen har dessutom utvecklat lokala varianter med inslag av i olika mån antimuslimskt, antisemitiskt, antiromskt och homofobiskt hat. Från Rumänien i öst till Storbritannien i väst bildas samtidigt uniformerade grupper av slagskämpar som understödjer den hatpropaganda som i dag i första hand sprids i digital form. Gränserna mellan den högerpopulism som försökte upprätta ett demokratiskt oantastligt ansikte, och den våldsamma rasismen, eller om man så vill, fascismen, är på väg att luckras upp (Gensing 2012; Staud & Radke 2012, Fuchs & Goetz 2012 Bernhardt 2012).För den skull ska man inte falla in i alarmism. Det är inte på något vis så att den högerextrema rörelsen utvecklas obehindrat. Tvärtom stö-ter den hela tiden på bakslag, antingen i form av antirasistiska massmobiliseringar, som de fyra senaste åren i tyska Dresden, eller till följd av strukturella problem hos rörelsen själv. (2013) har regeringen aktualiserat det omstridda extremismbegreppet och gjort det till praktisk politik, Sverigedemokraterna har präglat och delvis lamslagit det parlamentariska arbetet och en våg av näthat har drabbat offentligheten. Numret innehåller en kritisk granskning av extremismbegreppet, av sociologerna Adrienne Sörbom och Magnus Wennerhag. Markus Lundström och Tomas Lundström introducerar i stället begreppet "radikal nationalism" för att begreppsliggöra det höger-extrema politiska projektet i en exposé över dess utveckling under de senaste hundra åren i Sverige. Vidare diskuterar den nederländske forskaren Cas Mudde omfattningen av den våg av högerpopulism som spridits genom Europa. Bristerna inom forskningen om Sverigedemokraterna, och deras kontakter med andra delar av den högerextrema miljön, behandlas av den amerikanske musikvetaren Benjamin Raphael Teitelbaum.
